A* I am a failure at producing hydrated child scent. Again, Syn has no idea what I’m talking about. She goes around 3 times and finds nothing at all. Repeats the same thing 3 more times.

B* So I no longer believe that Syn is finding the target scent by looking for her own slobber on the cap of the saltshaker. I put cotton balls in her cheeks (her Don Corleone impression) and then used them to wipe down the caps of all the non-target shakers.

A* Interesting. Disappointing. We did some rounds before we started counting. Syn went around the wheel 5 times and found nothing. Excellent duration of hunt, but no recognition of anything.

I took the target out and had her touch it 5 times in my hand, then started this round. 100%. (I also picked up and fondled the other 5 bottles)

B* Same setup, but at 5 she picked #2 (no reason?), and stuck with it for the next 3, then got one right, and another one wrong. I took #2 out.

C* Very good without the attractive nuisance. Then after 6 she got 3 wrong in a row (always #6, which we haven’t worked in a week), and then one right.

A* Next time I’m going to try bringing her to my side and holding her for a second to see if that will calm her down instead of sending her right from the stay she’s in while I’m getting the wheel ready.

She rushes in all excited, catches the scent on the fly, and is lying down before she has a chance to be accurate. She got 3 wrong, 1 right, 1 wrong, and another right, and I stopped her.

I added my own scent to one of the neutral gauzes but, aside from giving it a fraction of a second more attention than the others, she wasn’t fooled by it a bit and it had no bearing on her mistakes.

B* And when she has a chance to calm down for 30 seconds, she goes back and works perfectly. Still no problem with my scent on the wheel (of course my scent is all over the wheel anyway).

C* Not much problem. I started her from my side with a calming pet. The error was yesterday’s can.

D* Now she’s thinking again. The error was consistently yesterday’s can. I need to get an extra can to replace the hot one from the day before. When she was done this round, I blew in each can, hoping to dissipate the scent from yesterday.

E* And it worked. This round was fast and accurate. She checked yesterday’s can several times and started to alert, but each time changed her mind and kept looking.
