ORIGIN of SAMPLE:  Tonic/clonic seizure; spit samples collected on cotton rounds and a roll of gauze (ran out of cotton rounds).  Clonazepam given after 2 minutes of seizure activity.

COMMENTS:   Hydrated sample. Tried the wheel X3, still no clue. Took the pill bottle with scent in it and rewarded X3 for “finding” it in hand. Then put it on the floor and let her find it and bring it to me x3. Then started moving it around. She’s searching by sight. No problem, at least she’s looking for it and not just throwing responses at me.

Then I hid it behind a table leg, she looked, couldn’t see it, gave me an alert, got no response from me, and started sniffing for it (she was right beside it), then followed her nose around the leg to find it. She had the idea then. She was finding it without seeing it from a couple of inches but couldn’t find it any further away than that– clearly no leaking scent like the tea bag and kibble.

Then I put it back on the small pill bottle wheel and she was successful but went over the right one twice before she zeroed in on it. Whatever she’s finding is very faint. When she finished her 10 reps, I moved back to the large tin can wheel and she was 100%. Usually she would stick her nose right in the can before she alerted.

So yes, she has the scent of the sample. But what scent has she got? The gauze? The number of times I’ve handled the pill bottle? The seizure scent? Dunno.

ORIGIN of SAMPLE:  Tonic/clonic seizure; spit samples collected on cotton rounds and a roll of gauze (ran out of cotton rounds).  Clonazepam given after 2 minutes of seizure activity.

COMMENTS: Got the first one right, then threw an alert at me the next 3 reps, then went back to perfect. It’s easy to tell when she’s fibbing, she doesn’t sniff the cans, she just circles the wheel to what must seem a likely spot and lies down. The first and third mistake, when I asked her which one? again, she went and found the right one. The second mistake, I had to call her to me, give her a pet and then ask her, and she got it.

Second round: Came in eager, only made 1 mistake in 20 reps, she was one off, I think she may have gotten a whiff but when I asked her again she missed it. She's working hard to find it, but is very certain when she does. We'll see if she can slide right in to working the second sample tomorrow. I'm going to wash the cans and do one more set with this original sample before moving on to the next one.
